Secret characters (Ninja characters)

Before the Chinese characters were introduced to Japan, we had original characters, which, some scholars say, originated in knotted ropes.

These characters were already out of use and no one could read them in the warring country period when the ninja thrived.

It is truly remarkable that the ninja, out of their wisdom, used them as secrete characters for liaison purposes.
